Dear Mary,

The theme for this month's newsletter is *Collaboration*. By formerly or informally working in partnership with other organizations, ACDC can share our assets, reach new communities, extend the impact of our work, and accomplish more than our staff of 8 could otherwise.

While collaborations always come with their own unique challenges, when two or more groups share a common vision for the future and work together to accomplish it, great things are possible. In celebration of the importance of collaborations in our work. ACDC will institute a monthly highlight of one of our partnerships, starting with the Chinatown Gateway Coalition.

But each item featured below involves working with others to further community development in Greater Boston: The Chinatown Coalition's work on emergency preparedness education, the MetroFuture regional planning events co-hosted by the Metropolitan Area Planning Council, and the up-coming Media Access Workshop with the Asian American Journalist Association. Even our upcoming Comedy Night involves collaborative work of many dedicated volunteers and business owners. We hope that something you see will inspire you to get involved!

Sincerely,
ACDC Staff and Board

 Partner Spotlight:
Chinatown Gateway Coalition

In late 2005, ACDC and a number of other community organizations, Chinatown residents and community members formed the Chinatown Gateway Coalition (CGC) to launch a community-wide campaign to reclaim the Chinatown Gateway Area (a.k.a. South Bay) through a participatory community planning process. The coalition looks to strengthen Chinatown, make sure community’s voice is heard, secure community’s active and effective role in the land use decision- making, and eventually ensure future development in the Chinatown Gateway Area will be beneficial to the community.

The Chinatown Gateway Area is located on land that is becoming available for redevelopment through the completion of the Big Dig. From last summer through early fall, the coalition conducted over a dozen of workshops engaging hundreds of residents, students, and community members. These workshops raise community awareness of what is happening in the Chinatown Gateway Area and encourage broad community participation in the campaign. The coalition has also reached out to neighboring communities and city officials to gain wide-spread support.

In addition to ACDC, the Coalition's members include the Chinese Economic Development Council, Chinatown Main Street, the Chinese Progressive Association, and the Chinatown Residents Association as well as a number of individuals. Members meet monthly and the coalition is open to anyone with an interest in the Gateway area or Chinatown community.

Right now the CGC is currently seeking two kinds of volunteers: Professional urban planning professionals who can help us plan a community planning charette and other professionals who live or work in Chinatown to participate in one of many focus groups, which the Coalition is using to better understand diverse community concerns about the Chinatown Gateway Area. If you are interested in getting involved in this effort, please contact info@chinat owngateway.org.

 MetroFuture
 Thanks to all who participated!

The Metropolitan Area Planning Council and ACDC co- hosted two special forums over the past week to gain input from the Asian community regarding a regional plan for Greater Boston's growth in the next 30 years. Thanks to MAPC and everyone who helped plan the event, and especially to the 30 people who attended and let their voice be heard.

These events were two of a great number that MAPC is doing around the region to gain input on a regional plan for growth as well as an implementation plan, public policy recommendations, municipal templates to guide their growth in concert with the regional plan, and a new set of leadership fostered through the participatory planning process.

 Be Prepared!
Simple tips to lessen the blow of disasters, maintain peace of mind

emergency With a grant from the Boston Public Health Commission in spring 2006, The Chinatown Coalition has been leading efforts to reach out to the Chinatown community on the importance of emergency preparedness planning, with support of its member organizations, including staff from ACDC and BCNC, among others. These efforts have included a media campaign, delivery of educational workshops, training service providers to reach their constituents, distribution of emergency kits, and participation in community outreach events to disseminate information.

Here are some helpful tips that have been provided to the community.

Currently Grub Street is working with a group of 9 Cantonese- speaking seniors and is seeking translators to help them refine shorts drafts. GS will pay $20/hour, and the sessions are taking place for the next 6 weeks from 10am-12pm on Tuesdays at the BCNC at 38 Ash Street.
