    Dear Mary,

There's no such thing as the lazy days of summer here at ACDC.  Summer is one of our most productive seasons.  We kick it into high gear, due in no small part to the influx of people power we get from our summer interns!  This year we have approximately 20 interns from high school through post-graduate school lending their time and energy to ACDC!  There's still room for a few more, too. Please see the listings below.

Thanks to each and every person who helps this small organization make a big impact in our community!
    Sincerely,
    ACDC Staff and Board
    Lynn Workshop Series
ACDC Organizers working with Lynn Khmer groups on variety of cultural and leadership development projects

The Lynn Cambodian Community Group continues to meet each month since January 2007 and the momentum is growing.  After the great success of the Khmer New Year celebration, the group started planning other community events.  As a part of this effort, ACDC will conduct a series of workshops for the leaders of the Lynn Khmer community in June and July.  Workshop topics include how to get information and resources out to the community; immigration and citizenship and a briefing on the state of the Cambodian community in Lynn.  In this last session Shirley Tang from the UMass Asian American Studies Program will present IAAS findings from a needs assessment for The Lynn Cambodian community taken in 2004.  The group is also working on another Khmer cultural event to bring the community together.  More details to come.

For more information on these events or how to get involved, please email Sophea Khem or call 617-482-2380 x 207.
    Films at the Gate

    Save the Date!

Please join us for a morning of excellent golfing, food, and philanthropy at our 4th Annual Asian Community Cup Charity Golf Tournament on September 17th, 2006 at Blackstone National Golf Club.  Last year we raised over $40,000 of support for ACDC's affordable housing development activities!

Please email Iris Tan to volunteer, sponsor, or reserve your foursome!

APA Heritage Celebration @ State House
First Annual event drew over 200 people!

The first annual APA Heritage Month Celebration at the State House was a wonderful event with over 200 people in attendance.  Senate President Sal DaMasi addressed the attendees and also read a proclamation from Gov. Deval Patrick, recognizing the event.  Other speakers included Newton Alderwoman Amy Mah Sangiolo and Fitchburg's mayorial candidate Lisa Wong, who gave stirring speeches about their own Asian Communities and the importance of having Asian American elected officials. Professor Paul Watanabe gave his insight into the state of the Asian American community in Massachusetts during his keynote address.

We would like to thank our co-sponsors the Asian American Commission and The Institute for Asian American Studies for helping us make the event a great success.  We would also like to thank all the restaurants and volunteers that generously donated their delicious food, time, and energy to the event. We wouldn't have been able to do it without you!

Please join us next year for the second annual APA Heritage Month Celebration at the State House!

    Asian Comedy Night

    Event met fundraising goals!

Yes, this man is doubled over with laughter.  And we're responsible.

Yet again the Asian Comedy Night Team out-did themselves.  The event raised over $25,000 thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and the hard work of our Comedy Night Committee.  Thanks to our sponsors, especially to our Gold Sponsor, John Moriarty & Associates, and our Silver Sponsors, Boston Private Bank & Trust, Citizens Bank, and Proctor & Gamble.  A special thanks also to co-chairs Michael Tow and Jeffrey Moy for corralling the troops and overseeing the details of the event, and also to Paul Lee, owner of the Hong Kong Restaurant, and Rick Jenkins of the Comedy Studio for donating the venue!  Also a hearty thanks to our comics Kevin Kataoka, Joe Wong (who joined us for the 3rd year in a row!), and James Wu for delivering such stand-out stand-up!

      Media Access Workshop
Attendees gained the skills to get the message out!

The Asian American non-profit and activist community got a good dose of the ins and outs of accessing the media at the first annual Media Access Workshop on May 19th.  Thirty people attended to hear a panel of 9 guest speakers who represented both print and broadcast media.  Workshop attendees included people from Quincy, Malden, Lynn, Lowell, and Boston.  The panelists also came from a diverse range of media, the Boston Globe, Patriot Ledger, WCVB Channel 5, ESPN, as well as independent journalists.  The panel talked about the varying ways to get messages into the media.  Attendees broke into groups to give one on ones about writing an effective press release.  We hope that everyone who attended will take this resource back to their organizations and communities and get the Asian American voice out to the public!
