A Chinatown Banquet
A Chinatown Banquet is an artful series of documentary
video shorts featuring interviews with over 70 members of the Chinatown
community. Based on the metaphor of a Chinese banquet, each video serves up a
different taste of the history, culture, and contemporary issues in one of
Boston’s most vibrant neighborhoods. Layers of personal recollections, quotes,
old video footage and photographs offer an unprecedented look at the history and
prospects of an evolving community. The pieces address a wide range of topics, including gentrification, youth culture, the refugee experience, and the widespread Chinatown activity of bootlegging alcohol during Prohibition.
A Chinatown Banquet is publicly installed in the front window of United
Commercial Bank at 68 Harrison Avenue.
A Chinatown Banquet is available for purchase from the Asian Community Development Corporation. DVDs are just
$30.00 (plus tax), and include almost 3 hours of content, plus an indepth look at the five-year-long process of creation and its affect on Chinatown. All proceeds will go to the Chinatown Heritage Project.
