In late 2002, Sinocast radio, the only full-time Cantonese language radio broadcast in all of New England, fell silent. Its loss struck a blow to the Chinese communities in the greater Boston region.

The Chinatown Youth Radio Project is the first step towards reinstating Cantonese-language radio in Chinatown by giving Chinatown youth access to a diverse and rich medium for cultural, social, and political expression, as well as hands-on experience in this medium through a comprehensive training curriculum designed to teach skills in radio broadcasting, writing, audio production, and media literacy. The CYRP currently broadcasts twice a week - Tuesday and Saturday - on WMFO.
