Volunteer Opportunities

We are always seeking dedicated volunteers to work with the board and staff to further our mission.  Volunteering is a great way to get involved in the community, learn a new skill, or meet people with similar interests. 

Immediate needs for volunteer help include:

  • Office administration and general assistance
  • Planning our Annual Meeting
  • Event coordination for our annual Asian Comedy Night

Other examples of volunteer opportunities include:

  • Lending a hand in special event planning and preparation
  • Participating in ACDC outreach efforts at festivals and other community events

Internship Opportunities

Internships provide invaluable work experience for those looking to explore further education or a career in the non-profit field.  Interns at ACDC may work within one of our program areas: Urban/Community Planning, Community Development, and Affordable Housing and Real Estate Development.  Interns may work with ACDC staff on discrete projects lasting several months - a timeframe suitable for students working on an independent project or semester-long class.

Examples of program internships available include:

Community Organizing Intern:

Work with ACDC’s community organizer to bring community members together to identify community needs, visions for the future, and steps toward fulfilling common goals

Responsibilities:

  • Develop strategies and activities to help us grow our membership and mailing list

  • Assist us organizing community events/meetings to get community members involved in community development opportunities

  • Manage office files and computer database       

Qualifications:  

  • A passion for helping Asian community development

  • good communication skills

  • capability of working independently

  • some basic knowledge on Microsoft Excel and Access

  • Experience in community work and verbally bi-lingual (Chinese, English) preferred.

Comprehensive Home Ownership Intern:

Work with our Comprehensive Home Ownership Program manager to develop an English-language Homebuying 101 course based on the current course we offer in Cantonese and Mandarin. No Chinese language skills required, though it may be helpful.

Duties will include:

  • Contacting guest speakers and clients for the 101 workshops

  • Delivering Home Ownership Counseling (with training)

  • Working on HB 101 workshops in English

  • Follow up with program participants and collect information about the effectiveness of the program.

  • Other related duties pertaining to CHOP
     

Youth Programs Intern:

Help with outreach, curriculum development, technical needs, and day to day operations of our youth program A-VOYCE- Asian Voices of Organized Youth for Community Engagement and its to project components, the Chinatown Youth Radio Program, and the Chinatown Walking Tour Collective.

Duties will include:

  • Recruiting high-school youth for the program

  • Helping develop and deliver training curriculum

  • Assist in editing radio programs

  • Develop materials for recruitment, promotion, and funding

  • Other day-to-day needs of the program

Chinatown Heritage Project Intern:

Work on the marketing and development of the Chinatown Heritage Project, a unique program which highlights the history and culture of the neighborhood at the same time that it boosts tourist-oriented small businesses in the neighborhood.

 

Possible Duties:

  • Help coordinate partner activities and meetings

  • Help develop and implement the programs fundraising plan  

  • Draft fundraising and marketing materials, including direct mail pieces, brochures, and flyers to promote the individual donor campaign

 

Requirements:

  • Marketing/Communications education and/or experience highly desirable

  • Excellent writing and verbal skills

  • Written or spoken fluency in Asian languages particularly attractive, though not required.  Cantonese would be especially useful.

  • Self-motivated

  • Strong work ethic, Multi-tasking skills, Well-organized

  • Excellent social skills

The ACDC is currently seeking two to three college or graduate-level interns to assist in fundraising and organizational development.  All candidates should be outgoing with a strong work ethic and a basic understanding of non-profits.  They should possess a strong desire to learn about non-profit management and fundraising.  This small, young office offers dedicated and responsible interns ample opportunities to take important roles in projects of interest, while offering a comprehensive view of the overall operations of a non-profit.  Knowledge and interest in the Asian American community helpful but not required.  Comfort in a multi-cultural organization is key, however.  For more information about the following opportunities, please contact Jason Chou at 617-482-2380 x 201 or by email jason.chou@asiancdc.org.

Communications Intern:

Work with the Communications Director on a variety of public relations and promotional materials for a number of programs. 

Possible Duties:

  • Draft press releases, brochures, reports, presentations, or the annual report

  • Coordinate monthly e-newsletter

  • Help maintain contact database

Requirements:

  • Marketing/Communications education and/or experience highly desirable

  • Excellent writing and verbal skills

  • Written or Spoken fluency in Asian languages particularly attractive, though not required.  Cantonese would be especially useful.

  • Knowledge of MS Access highly desirable

 

Foundations and Grant Management Intern:

Work with the Development Director to strengthen the organization’s capacity for tracking and applying for foundation and government grants. 

 

Possible Duties:

  • Research and document organization’s grant history

  • Update foundation files- both paper and electronic

  • Track upcoming deadlines using foundation database

  • Help identify, research, and pursue new foundation and government grant opportunities.  

  • Interns exhibiting advanced writing skills will be able to work with the Development Director on a master grant narrative.

 

Requirements:

  • Excellent research and organizational skills

  • Internet skills essential; Proficiency in Microsoft Access preferred

  • Attention to detail

  • Upbeat, outgoing attitude

  • Excellent writing and critical thinking skills

 

Special Events Coordinator:

Work with the Development Director and the Board Fundraising Committee plan and implement ACDC’s annual fundraiser for Fall, 2005.

 

Possible Duties:

  • Coordinate Board’s Fundraising Committee meetings and provide them with support,

  • Help board and staff identify, cultivate, and secure sponsorships and in-kind donations for event, including items for a silent auction. 

  • Help recruit, train, and oversee volunteers

  • Help devise and implement a strategy for cultivating event participants into individual donors

  • Track all donations and acknowledgements for donations

 

Requirements:

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills

  • Project management skills and attention to detail

  • Outgoing personality.  Enthusiasm for working with people
